Pune: With Pune city witnessing a continuous surge in the novel coronavirus cases, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has now planned to bring in Special Police Officers (SPOs), appointed by the Pune city police for aid during previous lockdowns, as volunteers for tracing close contacts of coronavirus patients.

The administration has faced staff shortage in its efforts to trace close contacts of thousands of coronavirus patients in Pune city. The city police had previously selected local individuals from around the city to act as SPOs to help them in applying various rules during the lockdown period. They were supposed to make awareness about the COVID-19 situation and safeguard steps to be taken to curtail the spread of the contagion.

Coming to the assistance of PMC staff, police have equipped a list of 1,488 SPOs who have been registered for the required work for containing the outbreak. An official from PMC stated that SPOs will be provided with the training on how to trace the close contacts and approach these patients. Each of SPOs will be given the identity cards and protective gears.

WHAT ARE SPOS?

Special Police Officers (SPOs) are generally those who have been chosen and allotted duties that assist the city police’s efforts. Many SPOs are previously involved in coronavirus pandemic-related work such as surveys and management of isolation setups.
