Pune: Traffic on the road has been reduced in the city since last Tuesday. Even though the traffic lights were on, many people flouted the traffic rules, seeing the empty roads. However, even during the lockdown, the CCTV cameras installed in the city, kept an eye on the citizens. During the week, action has been taken against 4,706 drivers for violating the rules through CCTV cameras, in a span of seven days and a fine of Rs 21 lakh.
Police coverage in the city was increased after the lockdown was imposed. The main intersections were blocked. CCTV cameras picked up the offending drivers and immediately sent them a message from the traffic police about the violation.
A total of 4,706 drivers violating the rules in different parts of the city have been zero down under the various provisions laid down in the Motor Vehicle Laws and other traffic norms. The traffic police has collected fine worth Rs 22.18 lakh during the week.
Speaking to Sakal Times, the Senior Inspector Anil Patil, of the planning department in the traffic branch, said, "After the lockdown was imposed, the traffic police took action against the unruly. Many did not pay the amount due. Blockaded police investigated the driver. The amount of the fine was recovered from those who did not collect the amount due. The number of vehicles on various roads in the city is only 30 to 35 per cent more than usual. Police CCTV cameras were also operational during the lockdown. Cameras accurately picked up those who flouted the rules."
As per the traffic department of Pune city police jurisdiction, between July 13 to July 21 as many as 4,706 vehicles were captured by CCTV camera and the total fine amount is Rs 22.18 lakh, so far the traffic department has collected Rs 61,500 and overdue fine of Rs 21.57 lakh is yet to be collected
