Coronavirus Pune: Kothrud quarantine centre receives complaints on hygiene and inadequate facilities

Pune: Chatrapati Sambhaji School in Kothrud of Pune has received several complaints about inadequate facilities. To tackle this, members of Patit Pavan association Sharad Deshmukh, Sunil Marathe and Jalinder Temghere have requested Commissioner that in a scenario where proper facilities are unavailable, people should be allowed to quarantine at home. Some of the complaints involve allegations of unchanged mattresses and the although there is the availability of clean drinking water and sanitiser, there is still an absence of hygiene.

Santosh Shendage, who is quarantined at Chatrapati Sambhaji School said, “When we were quarantined, we learnt that the mattresses of people who were quarantined earlier aren’t changed with the new one. They are not even disinfected. Sanitisers were not placed at water taps and toilets.” He also added, “There were no utensils in toilets to use water. Many people were accommodated in a single room. If even a single person among us has coronavirus then there are chances that we will also get infected by it. There is a need to clear errors in quarantine centres or else Corona will spread.”

Chatrapati Sambhaji School has 23 rooms and 92 people can be accommodated here. As of now, 99 people have been quarantined at the school. As numbers of COVID-19 cases keep surging, the number of people getting quarantined is also increasing. Among the people who are quarantined, there is a high chance that some might have been infected with the virus. When one centre has that many people quarantined, it is important to maintain proper physical distancing norms. Also, keeping in mind the hygiene at the centre, spraying disinfectant from time to time should be taken into consideration. If not looked into, there is a good chance that it will contribute to the surging COVID-19 cases in Pune.

However, Shendage informed Sakal Times in the early hours of the day that sanitiser and water were later provided at the centre.
