Coronavirus Pune: COEP students make sensor-operated sanitiser bottles

Pune: "Don't touch anything outside, wash your hands frequently with soap or sanitiser and maintain social distancing" is the key in the fight against coronavirus. But how do you not touch a sanitiser bottle before the alcohol-based solution pops out of the bottle? This problem is faced by many of us who have started venturing out for work and livelihood. Sensing this problem, two MTech students from the College of Engineering Pune (COEP) have developed a smart solution. Sanitiser bottles equipped with IR sensors help its users to get their hands sanitized without touching the bottle's lid.

Bhushan Mahajan and Siddharth Tejale have come up with this novel idea for this sensor-operated sanitiser bottles. They have completed their Bachelor of Engineering (BE) degree education in Electronics and Telecommunications stream from the Bhujbal Knowledge City located near Nashik. Siddharth is presently pursuing his second-year curriculum in MTech from COEP. They both had started a startup named BS Transformation after completing their graduation. Sensor-operated sanitiser bottles are a product of their startup.

After the coronavirus pandemic started in March, Bhushan and Siddharth started thinking about finding a solution to safe handling of sanitizer bottles. They observed the problems faced by common citizens in marketplaces and researched for solutions to it.

Bhushan and Siddharth have used a one-litre 'ABS' plastic bottle and installed IR sensor to it. It has been powered with electricity supply for automatic operations. When any user puts his hand below the bottle sensor, 7ml of sanitising liquid is dispensed. That quantity of liquid for sanitizing hands is equivalent to washing hands with soap for 20 seconds which helps kill the coronavirus, said Bhushan Mahajan.

Siddharth Tejale said, "Sensor-based operation of sanitizer bottle is the safest and easiest way to maintain hygiene at public places. It can be used in crowded places like offices, shops, banks as well as homes. We have started its production at Nashik."
