PUNE: Senior Communist Party of India leader Shanta Ranade passed away due to old age on Wednesday evening at the age of 93. She was survived by daughter Sushma Datar, son-in-law Abhay Datar and grandson Sujay Datar.
She had participated in United Maharashtra Front, Goa Liberation Movement and Belgaon Satyagraha. She had been jailed several times due to her active participation in the party’s struggle at various stages. She was also an active member of Indian Women Federation, Working Women Committee and many other women organisations.
Ranade had completed her education from SNDT University and had started taking part in freedom movement where she got attracted to Marxism. She was also the scholar of Russian language and had completed her Russian language course from Moscow University and completed her MA in the language from Pune University. She had translated a Russian book by Konstantin Paustovsky in Marathi ‘Sagaracha Janam’. She also had bagged Soviet Land Nehru Award for it.
