Commuters angry with concretisation at Vishal Nagar

PUNE: Consistent delays in concretisation of Vishal Nagar Main Road in Wakad has made this congested road accident prone, in addition to adding to the woes of those travelling to or from Hinjawadi during rush hour.

Vishal Nagar main road, off Wakad Phata till the road that leads to Kaspate Vasti, is one of the roads that links Pune and Hinjawadi, which houses many prominent IT companies that employ thousands of techies from Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.

The four-lane road was already facing traffic issues as residential complexes, bungalows, restaurants and shops line both the sides of the road. The concretisation work of the existing tar road has been undertaken by the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC).

Business affected
Yogesh Patil, a resident of Vishal Nagar, faces problem while going to work on his two-wheeler, and blamed it on the  slow-paced work by the contracters.

Mohsin Khan, who owns a furniture store in that area even recounted how many accidents have taken place in this one kilometre stretch of road due to uneven road surface. “All shop owners from this locality have witnessed drastic slack in their business,” he said.

Restaurants are facing losses because customers are avoiding this area and parking space is also limited.

PCMC action awaited
This road comes under Ward No.26 of PCMC, and corporator from BJP, Mamata Gaikwad admitted that the sluggish work since October is indeed a problem.

“The PCMC has already sent three warning notices to the contractor Ingawale Constructions responsible for road construction work at Vishal Nagar. If the contractor fails to comply with deadlines, we’ll push for resolution to put the contractor in PCMC tender blacklist.”

Traffic Police Inspector of Sangvi division Umesh Tavaskar said they try to deploy additional traffic personnel on this route to man the traffic.

Concerns of local citizens

  • The route sees a mix of two-wheelers, four-wheelers and Mumbai-bound buses.
  • According to locals, this road construction work began in October but there isn’t any significant progress in even the one kilometre length.
  • Only single concrete lane has been completed till the day
  • The other untouched lane has to accommodate traffic both ways, which causes massive congestion.
  • The incomplete concrete work has resulted in mixed patch of concrete and tar road which is asymmetrically levelled due which many commuters have lost their balance and suffered injuries.
