COEP to hold model United Nations meet

PUNE: College of Engineering Pune (COEP) has organised the 8th edition of COEP-MUN (Model United Nations), the annual United Nations conference conducted by COEP Debating Society on December 8 and 9. Around 350 delegates, who are school and college going students, will participate in the conference.

COEPMUN’s stated aim is to develop critical thinking among participants, by making them familiar with the dynamics of United Nations committees while working and assuming the roles of UN representatives and members of other international organisations. COEPMUN ensures a wide platform for participants to exhibit and hone critical thinking, reasoning and debating.

The college committees and their agenda profile at COEPMUN’18 are G20: Regulation of cryptocurrencies across the globe, EU: European Immigration crisis, UNW: Fostering institution building and adoption of measures to achieve gender equality in line with the 2030 agenda, UNSC (Double Delegation): To discuss peace building and peacekeeping efforts in the Middle East. The school committees (for which the registrations have been closed) are UNDP: Revisiting the SDGs and MDGs pertaining to Climate Change, DISEC: Prevention of militarisation of outer space, UNHRC: Protection of Women and Children in War Zones.

Some students will also participate as the International Press Corps and will follow the procedures in all committees and try to observe and capture the highlights of the days’ debate. There will also be individual delegates as well as delegations (9+) from colleges all over India.

There will also be committee wise cash prizes. The best delegate will win a cash prize of Rs 8,000. There would be a high commendation prize of Rs 5,000 and a special mention prize of Rs 3,000. The Press Corps will also win prizes for the best photograph (Rs 3,000) and best report (Rs 3,000).
