Cloudy weather mars view of annular solar eclipse

PUNE: Citizens from Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad were disappointed as they missed the golden opportunity to watch the decade’s largest annular solar eclipse which took place on Thursday. The cloudy sky impeded the enthusiasts and scientists from viewing the spectacular diamond ring.

Executive Member of Jyotirvidya Pratishthan Bhumika Rathod said, “The next annular solar eclipse is on June 21, 2020, but again that time we will be having the rainy season. After that the opportunity will come only after 35 years.”

“It was a good opportunity to view sun spots during the eclipse, but we missed the opportunity,” Bhumika added.

Former head of Physics Department, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pandit Vidyasagar said, “The very feeling of experiencing night during the day was missed. During the eclipse 78 per cent of the Sun was to be covered and it would have given a better opportunity to feel the night during the day.”

“The next eclipse, on June 21, 2020 will not be seen from Maharashtra and thus people would have to travel north to view it,” Vidyasagar added. However, for Director of Nehru Planetarium Arvind Paranjpye it was a golden opportunity to spread awareness about science and to clear the myths surrounding the eclipse. He said, “These days people travel from one place to another. For annular eclipse also many headed down to Ooty and Kerala.”

“The novel thing which happened in Mumbai on Thursday was that I along with a few of my colleagues got the opportunity to take a flight beyond the clouds to watch the eclipse. There is this Space Gig company which had organised a flight to watch the eclipse by going beyond the clouds,” he said.
