Civic body starts widening work of old airport road

PUNE: The Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Road Department has started work of widening the old airport road from Jail road police chowki to 509 chowk. The Road Department claimed that this would help ease traffic congestions.

There are two airport roads - one is VIP airport road, which passes via Vimannagar, Symbiosis College while another is old airport road, which passes via Gunjan Talkies Nagpur Chawl, Jail road, 509 Chowk to the airport. Both roads join the Ahmednagar road.

Now, PMC is widening the old airport road stretch of 1.5 km from Yerawada police chowki to 509 chowk. It is one of the traffic congestion points on airport road between Gunjan Chowk to the airport. Passengers travelling to the airport often face severe traffic congestions.

According to Road Department, the Jail Department and Air Force handed over land for road expansion of the stretch. The work has started and will take around one month to complete.

While speaking to Sakal Times, Road Department Superintendent Engineer Ganpat Salunke said, “We have undertaken road widening work from Yerawada police chowki near Nagpur chawl to 509 chowk. It is a 20-metre wide road. Now, we are widening it by 10 metre to make it a 30-metre wide road. It will help solve traffic problems in the area. We are also going to widen 509 chowk, which is a major bottleneck on airport road.”
