City school starts a ‘Water Bell’ campaign for students

Pune: The Erandwane Madhyamik Vidyalaya (EMV) at Shankarao More Vidyalaya and Junior College Campus in Erandwane has started a unique ‘Water Bell’ campaign to ensure that students keep themselves hydrated during the school hours.

The ‘Water Bell’ initiative first began from Indraprastha Vidyalaya in Upinagadi near Mangalore in Kerala where breaks were given to the students and they were asked to drink water to prevent dehydration and urinary infections.

The teacher from EMV, who launched this initiative, came to know about it through social media.

Ashish Shelar, the school teacher who began the initiative, said, “Drinking less water can cause problems such as dehydration, urinary tract infection, etc. Therefore, doctors suggest drinking at least 3 to 4 litres of water every day.”

“When I came to know about this ‘Water Bell’ initiative through social media, I spoke to our school principal and she immediately gave her nod to begin this initiative,” said Shelar.

Apart from two intervals during school hours, two bells are rung to remind the students to drink water.
One bell is rung at 9:15 am, while the second at 11:30 am.

EMV Principal Nilima Khonde said, “When we noticed that our school students do not drink water regularly, we implemented this initiative. Now, as many as 300 students come with their water bottles in the school, which has increased the water drinking capacity among the students,” said Khonde.

“Students are given two-minute breaks to drink the water,” added Shelar.
