City colleges happy to welcome more students

Pune: While the State Government has proposed a 10 per cent increase in the number of seats for admission to Class XI or First Year Junior College (FYJC) courses, heads of city-based colleges have stated that they will be more than happy to welcome students.

State Education Department has shortlisted 19 junior colleges and higher secondary schools in the city, based on higher cut-offs last year. The decision has been made as the parents and students of State Board had feared that they would not be able to get admission to top colleges, due to the poor result of Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations this year.

While expanding the number of seats at any institute calls for an infrastructural shift, colleges have asserted that it would not make a big difference to accommodate around eight to 10 students per class or division. “We were asked if we could increase about 10 per cent of our student strength. Considering that we have around 120 students per division, and relatively big classrooms, I think we would as well be able to accommodate 12 students more per division easily. ,” said Modern College Principal Rajendra Zunjarrao.

Laxmanrao Apte Prashala and Junior College, which has the reputation of being one of the top junior colleges for science students in the city is also one of the 19 colleges asked to increase seats.

“Ours is a relatively smaller college, we have only three divisions of 80 students each for class XI. So technically, we can accommodate only eight more students each per class. We would have to add one more batch for the practicals may be, but apart from that, I don’t think we will have to make any major change. We will see how it works out once all the students are admitted,” Principal Teresa David told Sakal Times.

While bigger institutes like Fergusson College might have to accommodate a lot higher number of students, as their strength is already huge, Deccan Education Society Chairman Sharad Kunte said that would not be much of an issue as the students are still distributed across divisions. “An addition of 10 per cent is not that big if we look at it division-wise,” he stated.

Principal of Sir Parshurambhau (SP) College Dilip Sheth also reiterated that the college is happy to accommodate more students and if there is a need, more teachers would be appointed by the college.
