Citizens suffer because of lack of coordination in govt departments

Pune: The Wednesday’s flash flood incidents have revealed that there was lack coordination in Pune district administration, Pune Municipal Corporation, Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), police department and Smart City officials. No agency sent a single alert to any citizen on Wednesday when people were struggling due to flash floods.

There was a traffic jam due to flash floods, water was gushing in houses and there was no power supply in many areas.

PMC’s disaster management head Ganesh Sonune said, “We were monitoring IMD websites. We don’t get alert of particular areas. They give an alert of Pune district and region wise. We haven’t received such kind of alert from IMD.” On the other hand, District Collector Naval Kishore Ram said, “We are frequently monitoring predictions from IMD. It would be more helpful if the predictions are more precise. However, as we are not the competent authority to comment on IMD predictions, I cannot comment much on this.”

On the coordination issue, IMD weather department head Anupam Kashyapi said, “No end users ever approached us or called us to know more about the forecast or weather situation. We have published everything on our website. The drainage system in the city is not properly maintained leading to water accumulation in different areas. I do not know who is responsible for it. We have been giving the regular update about the weather on our website,” he said.

No presence of local corporators

Affected people were complaining that no local representatives were present to help affected people. District Guardian Minister Chandrakant Patil was not present in the city.

Congress Party leader Mohan Joshi said, “District Guardian Minister Chandrakant Patil was not in the city when people were suffering due to heavy rain. He was busy discussing seat-sharing issues in New Delhi. Our corporators and party workers were helping people.”
