PUNE: ‘Start a green new year by calculating your own carbon footprint’, is a new online initiative launched by Climate Collective Pune (CCP) group to help manage micro-level carbon footprint of citizens.
The CCP evolved for collective actions to enhance the public awareness. about the climate change at every level - individuals, communities, institutions and businesses and to create a citizen movement for ‘Climate Action’ for making the Pune region ‘Carbon Neutral’ by 2030.
Amitav Mallik, trustee at Pune International Centre and driving force behind the ‘Environment and Climate Change Project’ to serve the objectives of the CCP, said, “The main focus is on improving energy efficiency across all applications using electricity and to maximise the use of renewable energy sources minimising the dependence on fossil fuels. The CCP group will also work for enhancing the ‘Carbon Sink’ capacity of the city by increasing forest and green cover and by encouraging adoption of technologies for Carbon Sequestration and Storage (CSS).”
Priyadarshini Karve, Director of Samuchit Enviro Tech, said, “Earlier, we used to organise awareness drives wherein we used to collect data from people on their usage of energy, from which carbon footprint was calculated. According to our study the average carbon footprint of an individual is 4 tonnes annually, if we succeed in reducing this individually then we can achieve a better future.”
“There are two major contributors for the increase in carbon footprint including electricity and transport and it can be reduced individually by using solar power and by car pulling traffic and petrol or diesel consumption would reduce,” he said.
CARBON FOOTPRINT CALCULATOR
- To get the carbon footprint of every individual, the person has to fill in the details on http://www.climatecollectivepune.org/ of their electricity, cooking energy, transport, air travel and indirect emission estimation.
- After filling the details, one can get their exact carbon footprint of the day.
