BSNL : Aadhaar updation and new plans

Pune: All the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) Customer Service Centres (CSC) in the district will soon provide the facility of Aadhaar updation. The Principal General Manager for BSNL Pune region, DC Dwivedi, made the announcement while inaugurating the Aadhaar updation centre at Sanchar Bhavan, Satara Road, on Tuesday.

The services will be available at eight centres immediately and rolled out across the rest in the coming days. The eight centres are at Satara Road, Telephone Bhavan at Bajirao Road, Model Colony, Dhankawadi, Yerwada, Hadapsar, Chinchwad and Bhosari. The centres will facilitate updation of demographic details and biometric details and also offer colour or black and white printouts at nominal charges.

Speaking on the initiative, Dwivedi said that BSNL has been authorised by UIDAI to provide Aadhaar services. “Right now, we are starting only with updation services and once there is streamlining of the system, we will commence enrolments as well. We will try to ensure that customers don’t have to wait for more than a few minutes. In the beginning, it may take longer but we will try to minimise the delays,” he added.

Application analyst from UIDAI Abhishek Pandey said, “We have seen issues of malfunctioning and exorbitant charging for Aadhaar updations and enrollments by private companies. In light of this, we have decided to provide the services through Public Sector Units (PSU). BSNL is one of the companies that have a greater reach among the common man. Other PSUs will also be providing Aadhaar services, including certain banks.”

Asheesh Pathak from BSNL spoke about new schemes and plans launched by the company to compete with private players like Reliance Jio. He also said that BSNL Pune district is focusing on laying of fibre optic cables in the district and 44 ‘Fibre To The Home’ (FTTH) providers have been empanelled. “We are also tying up with cable network providers for FTTH. Our copper cables are 20 years old and have been damaged due to constant infrastructure development work. Apart from that, to boost our mobile network, we are installing 400 BTS in the district. 200 radio/mini links are also being installed in the city to strengthen the network,” he added.
