BORI announces course in philosophy under its ADP

PUNE: The Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute (BORI) under its Academic Development Programme (ADP) supported by Infosys Foundation has announced a five-day course in Bhartrihari and Philosophy (Sanskritic as well as Western). The last date of registration for the course will be November 25.

Bhartrihari was one of the very rarely studied philosophers in Indian (Sanskrit) philosophy. The course will be held at BORI from December 2 to 6, and the last date of registration will be November 25.

The course will not concentrate on the form derivation side of Sanskrit as a language, but will also concentrate on philosophy/theory of language, grammar and approach it from the vantage point of language (principally semantics). Relevant readings from the works of Bhartrihari and his ancient commentators will be provided in Devanagari or transliteration Roman script to those who complete registration for the course.

At the course, registrants will be encouraged to adopt a ‘buddy system’, that is, working with other registrants who read the concerned scripts well or were more proficient in Sanskrit as a language. The lectures will involve reading of the selected texts, preceded by an elucidatory commentary in English (and occasionally in Sanskrit, Hindi and Marathi). This will give the participants exposure to manuscriptology and textual criticism.

BORI is hoping that the course will see a set of readings that could be viewed as a first draft of ‘Bhartrihari: a philosophical or theoretical reader’ - a book that Bhartrihari would have written if he was writing for a modern reader.

Graduates from any course would be eligible to participate in this course. The fees for the same art Rs 500 for physical attendance as well as a webinar for Indian participants, and USD 50 for international participants by webinar.
