BJP, Sena prepare plan to strengthen voter base

MUMBAI: Though the Shiv Sena and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are claiming that they are contesting the upcoming State Assembly election jointly, both the parties have decided to woo women voters through unique ways.

The BJP’s women’s wing has decided to collect two lakh rakhis and send it to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on the occasion of ‘Raksha Bandhan’ which is on August 15.

Women workers of BJP said that they would send the rakhis to CM Devendra Fadnavis as a mark of gratitude for ushering in fast paced development in his tenure as the chief minister. According to President of BJP’s State women wing Madhavi Naik, the wing will collect at least 100 ‘Raksha Sutra’ from each booth and at least 35,000 rakhis from each constituency of the State Legislative Assembly. “Two lakh rakhis will be sent to Fadnavis,” she said.

“972 women will collect rakhis and will complete the collection by August 15,” Naik added.

To counter BJP’s move, the Shiv Sena is all set to start a ‘Mauli Sanwad’, where Shiv Sena leader Aadesh Bandekar will travel across the state and communicate with women.

Shiv Sena leader Aadesh Bandekar hosts a popular Marathi TV show - Home Minister - and is fondly called Bhauji (Brother-in-law). In the show,  he addresses the women participants as Mauli.

Shiv Sena decided to cash in the popularity of their leader among women to directly communicate with them.

“Aadesh Bandekar will go to women gatherings and discuss various issues and problems they face,” a Shiv Sena leader said.

Both the saffron parties are claiming an alliance but are working separately to strengthen their base in the State. “We are trying to strengthen our vote bank, while the BJP is strengthen their vote bank,” said the leader.

Speaking to Sakal Times, Aadesh Bandekar said, “The ‘Mauli Sanwad’ will commence from Friday. The first meeting of this programme will be held in a village in Palghar district. I will meet the women at a temple in the village along with local Shiv Sena leaders. We will discuss their problems and try to incorporate enduring solutions in the party’s election manifesto.”
