PUNE: Railway passengers across the country complain about the poor quality of food served during the journey. Passengers always demand that railways should provide a better quality of food.
The railways has introduced a new system where a barcode will be printed on food packets mentioning the name of the kitchen where food was cooked and the date of packaging.
The decision was taken after Railway Minister Piyush Goyal had given a statement in Lok Sabha. He said, “Other measures to improve food quality are -- roping in branded food providers to provide e-catering services on trains, deploying food safety supervisors in kitchen units to monitor food safety and hygiene practices and surprise inspections by railway officials, including food safety officers.”
In February 2017, the railways had introduced a new catering policy to improve the catering services and provide safe, healthy and quality food to passengers.
A senior railway officer in Pune said that the railways has started working on it and asked the catering owner to give details about a number of packed food sold.
“We have been instructed recently to check the quality of the food. We have asked all food vendors to provide details of the number sold. It will take time to initiate the new system as printing barcodes is not an easy task as there is a long process involved,” said an officer of Pune Railway Division.
