'Army has inputs about possible terror attack in southern India'

Pune: Army Commander Lieutenant General SK Saini said there were inputs about possible terror attacks in southern and peninsular India. He said enhanced capacity building has been undertaken in Sir Creek region, Gujarat, after abandoned boats were found there.

He was speaking to media persons on the sidelines of the foundation stone laying ceremony of Phase II of the Army Law College at Kanhe, about 40 km from Pune, on old Mumbai-Pune highway.

“We have many inputs that there may be a terrorist attack in southern part of India and peninsular India. Some abandoned boats have been recovered near Sir Creek. We have undertaken measures for capacity building in the area of Sir Creek, keeping in mind the enhanced threat perception. We are taking precautions to ensure the designs of inimical elements or terrorists are stalled and they do not succeed,” he added.

On the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, Lt Gen Saini said, “Any conflict which is in the sub-conventional domain, has both internal and external dimensions. In the case of J&K, the external dimension is more pronounced. We have a clear cut policy based on which we have been resolving insurgencies. The government takes a comprehensive view of every conflict and undertakes political, economic, social and diplomatic measures to resolve it. Army’s role is to create conducive conditions for such initiatives by the government. At the moment, the Army is fully geared to challenge any contingency which arises in the situation as far as J&K is concerned.”

When asked about statements made by political and military leadership of Pakistan in the recent past including those on nuclear weapons, the General Officer said, “Threats do not change the way we function and we are ready for any situation.”
