Apna Time Aayega, PubG kites trending

PUNE: With Makar Sankranti being celebrated on January 15, kites with PubG theme and Apna Time Aayega slogans are trending this year and are in high demand.

“The new varieties of kites, which have come this year are PubG and Apna Time Aayega - a song from the Bollywood movie Gully Boy. They are made up of metallic paper and are very much in demand. The PubG themed kites have more demand due to its popularity,” said Muzaffar Kazi, owner of Kazi Patang Depot in Ravivar Peth.

However, kite shop owners in the city feel that the overall demand for kites in Pune has reduced as youngsters are not showing interest in this age-old tradition.

Kazi, who has been running a kite shop for the past three generations, feels that the tradition is gradually decreasing. He said, “It is three days to Makar Sankranti and there are hardly any kites in the sky. The tradition of kite flying is reducing every year as people are not interested in flying kites and are more engrossed in their phones.”

Kazi further said that the supply of kites has gone down by 25-30 per cent due to heavy rainfall this year affecting production and the demand has also been on the lower side. “This is the reason why kite prices have remained stable,” he said.

“Our kites come from Ahmedabad and this year, the new kites, which have been in demand are PubG and Apna Time Aayega as it is popular among youngsters. But the demand has been less this year,” said Shiraz Tamboli of Shiraz Patang Depot.

The kites are available in the market ranging from Rs 5 to Rs 25 in paper, metallic paper, cloth and other materials.

RAINFALL HITS BAMBOO FRAME SUPPLY
- Most of the kites manufactured in Uttar Pradesh use bamboo frames, which are supplied from Kolkata.
- Due to heavy and extended rainfall in 2019, the bamboo was still fresh and wet and not suitable for frame-work.
- The supply of bamboo affected the quality of kites.
