PIMPRI: The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has announced that the residents will receive water on alternate days with effect from Monday, May 6.

The cut in water supply has been taken in view of the depleting water storage in Pavana dam. Presently, there is a water cut in the city only once a week. The decision of alternate day water supply has been taken with a view to planning regular water supply till July 15.

Pavana dam, which is the source of water for Pimpri Chinchwad, has 8.51 tonne million cubic (TMC) feet storage capacity. The dam had only 2.52 TMC (less than 30 per cent) water till Thursday, May 2. This water storage is adequate to meet the water requirement of the city till the third week of June. The municipal corporation has imposed the water cut with the plan to supply the available water till mid-July.

PCMC Irrigation Department’s Deputy Engineer AM Gadwal said, “Pavana dam’s present water storage will meet water requirement till June 25. Water from the dam was released when the dam was filled to its capacity in August last year. However, there was no rainfall after that and since then, the dam had less storage.”

The municipal administration has also announced the schedule of the areas, which will receive water on particular days of the week and will not receive water on the subsequent days.

Accordingly, the areas that will receive water on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday will not receive water on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
