All is not well for Laxman Jagtap

Pimpri: Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Chinchwad MLA and party’s city chief Laxman Jagtap is having a taste of his own medicine these days. The issue of unauthorised constructions, which was his main election plank during the assembly elections has come to haunt him.

Jagtap is certainly at the receiving end of the public anger against possible demolition of over 1,000  constructions which come in the reserved area for a ring road in the development plan of Pimpri-Chinchwad New Township Development Authority (PCNTDA).

NCP, which was on the back foot due to an intense campaign by BJP on the issue of illegal constructions and double penalty tax on unauthorised constructions, has suddenly turned aggressive to push Jagtap and his party into a corner.

The BJP came to power in the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) for the first time. The issue provided an opportunity to the NCP, which is desperate to gain its lost power in PCMC.

Before the 2014 Assembly elections, the issue of unauthorised construction was the topic of a hot debate.  The Mumbai High Court has ordered PCMC to demolish these constructions. When Dr Shrikar Pardeshi was commissioner of PCMC the demolition action against these structures were accelerated. But political leaders managed to get him transferred.

Even after two-and-half years in power, the solution of the issue is elusive. On the other hand, government agencies started a survey of unauthorised construction in the Development Plan roads of PCNTDA. This sparked a protest against the government.
