PUNE: In a shocking incident, Deepali (65) wife of noted theatre person Dilip Kolhatkar (70), was found dead in a half-burnt state at the couple’s residence near Mehendale Garage in city’s upmarket Kothrud area on Thursday night. Following the incident, a case of murder was lodged against an unidentified person in this regard at Alankar police station.
According to the police, Dilip is bedridden for past three years and the family has engaged two male caretakers in two shifts to take care of him. Apart from the couple, the deceased’s mother Asha Sahasrabuddhe (85) used to live with them. The police told Sakal Times that Asha, who was watching TV in her room witnessed smoke billowing from the kitchen. Unable to comprehend the reason for the smoke she stepped out to seek neighbour’s help.
“When neighbours and Asha rushed to check the smoke, they found Deepali’s body in a half-burnt state,” police said. The incident took place at 8 pm. Senior Police Inspector Rekha Salunke told Sakal Times that initially, the police thought it was an accident and she must have caught fire while lighting a lamp. She added, however, the advanced post-mortem points out that the deceased had a head injury and throttling marks on her body.
Salunke said that due to injury marks they decided to register a murder case against an unidentified person. She added that out of the two caretakers who work with Kolhatkar’s, one used to come at 9 pm and used to leave at 8 am and the other used to come at 8 am and leave around 7.30 pm. PI Salunke said the police are investigating all the angles and no one has been rounded up for questioning.
