PUNE: Only 10 per cent of all cancer cases can be attributed to genetic factors, whereas the remaining 80 to 90 per cent have their roots in the environment and lifestyle, said Dr Mansi Munshi Girme, Radiation Oncologist, while speaking about ‘Genetics in Cancer’. He was speaking at a cancer awareness programme at Ruby Hall Clinic Kamalnayan Bajaj Cancer Centre on Sunday. The programme was arranged to mark the World Cancer Day.

Dr Ashok Bhanage, Chairman, Cancer Centre, Ruby Hall Clinic; Dr Minish Jain, Medical Oncologist; Dr Mansi Munshi Girme, Radiation Oncologist; Shubhada Cruz, AGM, Cancer Center; Dr Anupama Mane; and Dr Shilpy Dolas, Consultant Breast Oncosurgeon; and Cancer warriors were present on the occasion.

The awareness programme included sessions on genetics in cancer, before, during and after treatment. A skit on cancer awareness, ramp walk, panel discussion on holistic care and motivational talks by cancer warriors were held.

Dr Mansi Munshi Girme said that if anyone is diagnosed with breast, uterus or ovarian cancer at a young age then there is a chance that it can be hereditary. “Genetic counseling is an important part of the risk assessment process and helps patients understand their genetic testing options and outcomes,” said Dr Girme.

A panel discussion related to holistic cancer care was arranged during the programme and was moderated by Shubhada Cruz. They discussed need of social workers for cancer patients, diet according to chemo cycle, psychological need, nursing and cancer rehabilitation.

Dr Minish Jain, Medical Oncologist, spoke about the medical care before, during and after treatment.

“Health and happiness are two important things. Genetic and environmental factors together cause cancer. The recurrence rate is related to the stage and type of cancer,” said Dr Jain.
