60k unaided school teachers on agitation

Pune: Over 60,000 teachers from unaided schools across the State have begun a protest in Mumbai. They allege they are being called upon to do election duty by the State Government, though according to the law, they cannot be directed to do so.

The issue has found ground again as the State drifts closer to Assembly polls. The protest was convened by School Principals’ Association. The protesters said that as they failed to get any grant from the government, they would not be participating in the election duty for the upcoming election.

The Bombay High Court passed an order that the staff of the private unaided schools cannot be directed to take up election duty. The order came following a petition by the Unaided Forum.

The order said that the teaching and non-teaching staff of the private unaided schools cannot be directed to take up election duty, since they are not covered under Section 159 of Representation of the People Act.

The order came following a petition by the Unaided Forum.

Rajendra Singh of Independent English Schools Association (IESA) said the order had not stopped the government from demanding services from the teaching and non-teaching staff of private unaided schools.

“Several teachers still continue to get orders to participate in election duty. At times, these orders would seem threatening. Although we have the support of the law on our side, we are still not free from this harassment from the government,” Singh said.
