PUNE: To make central Pune (Peth areas) congestion-free, 60 CCTV cameras will be installed at 23 chowks and live footage will be monitored by the Pune city police traffic branch from its headquarters in Yerawada. The footage will also be monitored from its local Vishrambaug traffic division.
DCP (Traffic) Pankaj Deshmukh floated a tender on Wednesday for selection of agency for design, implementation, operations and maintenance of CCTV-based surveillance system for Pune Traffic Police.
According to Pune police officials, the traffic branch intends to stabilise the traffic conditions by ensuring space for free-flow of traffic without congestions in Peth areas majorly in Vishrambaug traffic division and nearby areas. The Peth areas in Vishrambaug jurisdiction are heavily populated in terms of residential as well by the commuting crowd throughout the city due to religious destinations and shopping availabilities.
The traffic branch has marked certain roads as one-way traffic roads to ensure the minimal traffic congestions.
To bring these areas under CCTV surveillance as well as to ensure enforcement of traffic rules, CCTV-based surveillance system will be installed in the areas. These are an addition to the already existing CCTV cameras at major chowks.
The traffic branch has approximately 1,100 personnel and a total of 24 traffic divisions under its jurisdiction.
Due to manpower shortage to enforce laws, the police have CCTV command centre to monitor live traffic movement and issue e-challan and send to addresses of the violators accordingly. The violators are also made to pay at chowks if caught by police.
