53rd AWWA Foundation Day celebrated in city

Pune: The 53rd Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA) Foundation Day was celebrated on Friday, which was a culmination of a number of events conducted during the month focused at welfare of Veer Naris (war widows) and families of serving soldiers of Indian Army.

Pune-based Southern Command AWWA has paid special attention to empowerment of women by running Army Skill Training Centres under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana at eight locations and 42 Vocational Training Centres (VTC) across 11 states. It is also running Army Pre-Primary Schools and Asha Schools for special children, Shravan programme for audio verbal therapy to hearing-impaired children and Prerna, a voluntary initiative to provide emotional and social support to cancer patients.

AWWA Regional President Neena Saini was the chief guest during the celebration at Rajendra Sinhji Institute wherein AWWA awards of excellence were given to ladies and children for their voluntary contribution to the organisation.

While addressing a gathering of 500 families of Pune Military Station, Saini complimented them for their efforts in solving problems of members and beneficiaries. She said AWWA would continue to empower wives of serving and retired soldiers and their kin, thereby making them self-reliant. She urged the families to create a happy and healthy environment thereby living up to their reputation of being ‘the invisible hands that shape the punch of the Indian Army’.
