5 arrested in rice puller scam

PUNE: Officials of the Lashkar police station arrested five persons in the famous ‘rice puller scam’ case.

The arrested accused were identified as Noorelahi Shaikh (32) of Kondhwa, Asif Khan(41) of Nana Peth, Riyaz Khan (25) from Kondhwa, Mahesh Nanaware (29) from Kondhwa and Imran Pathan (30) from Hadapsar.

As per Lashkar police, the accused cheated a farmer from Satara of Rs 3 lakh. The police said the victim was promised profit of Rs 40 lakh to Rs 50 lakh once he buys the ‘rice puller’ machine.

Police said the accused convinced the victim that rice pullers are metal objects which attract grains of rice and have magical property.

Police Inspector Arun Hazare of Lashkar police said the victim was earlier a resident of Pune and was staying in Wai, Satara. Once the victim parted with the money, he could not contact the accused. Following which he approached the Lashkar police and lodged a case.

Recently, the Pimpri Chinchwad police arrested three persons — Siddheshwar Sonkamble (44), a resident of Solapur, Balaji Janate (27), a resident of Nanded, and Amit Kedar (32), a resident of Ahmednagar, in a similar scam. The police said the trio was wanted in the rice puller scam in Bengaluru. The Bengaluru police had coordinated with the Pimpri Chinchwad police and had informed them about the involvement of the accused in the scam, who were staying in Pimpri Chinchwad.
