45-yr-old trader killed in mishap due to pothole

Pune: In yet another pothole-related death, a 45-year-old trader lost his life when he fell while trying to avoid a pothole and was ran over by a truck coming from behind. The mishap took place near Giridhar Bhavan Chowk, near Market Yard on Wednesday night.

The deceased was identified as Sandip Vasantlal Shaha of Gangadham, Bibvewadi-Kondhwa Road.

According to the police, after closing his shop in Raviwar Peth, Shaha was returning home when the incident took place at 10.30 pm opposite Suyog Centre. Shaha applied brakes ahead of the pothole and his two-wheeler skidded on rubble and he fell down. The driver of a truck coming from behind could not stop in time. The truck ran over Shaha, killing him.  The passersby informed the police who took the truck driver Sanjay Bagul into custody.

Head Constable A Patil, who is investigating the case, said Shaha lost control due to the pothole and rubble. This is not the first case in Pune when a life was lost due to negligence of the civic body in filling potholes. Last month, a 20-year-old woman was run over by a truck after she fell from her scooter which had gone into a pothole. Zainab Hatyari of Kondhwa died at the Khadi Machine Chowk on the Katraj-Phursungi Road.

In another accident near Tadigutta Chowk, Mundhwa, software engineer Sushil Maharaj Pandita (39) who was returning home in Keshavnagar after making some purchases at a mall, fell down after his two-wheeler skidded over rubble near a pothole. He was run over by a tempo coming from behind on July 29.
