3 held for smuggling  two leopard cubs

Officials from Rajgad police station under the jurisdiction of Pune rural police have arrested three persons on Monday for smuggling two leopard cubs.

Pune: Officials from Rajgad police station under the jurisdiction of Pune rural police have arrested three persons on Monday for smuggling two leopard cubs. They were caught near Khed-Shivapur toll plaza on the Pune-Satara highway. The cubs have been kept in a shelter home at Katraj Zoo.

The arrested accused persons have been identified as Munshi Habib Sayyed (31) of Kavatheyamai, in Shirur taluka, Irfan Mehmood Shaikh (32) of Kondhwa Budruk, and car driver Aayas Pathan (40) of Ghorpade Peth.

Assistant Police Inspector Dattatray Darade informed that on Monday around 11 am, police constables Ambadas Burute, Sachin Kadam and traffic warden Manoj Nimbalkar were checking vehicles. They were checking the accused’s vehicle when they found two cubs - one male and one female- kept in a cage and a blue box. The accused persons had smuggled the cubs from Bengaluru and intended to sell them in a foreign country. The cubs are about four months old.

The forest department and Katraj zoo officials were informed who came and took the cubs in custody. Police Sub-Inspector Sameer Kadam is investigating the case.
