PUNE: Construction of the new terminal of Pune Airport is 22 per cent complete. The Airport Authority of India (AAI) is expecting to complete it on time and start operations by 2022.

The new terminal building will have a state-of-the-art facility. The building will cater to both domestic and international fliers. The tender for the purpose was awarded to Mumbai-based ITD Cementation India Ltd in September 2018. The work was started in mid-December 2018.

“The work of the new terminal building will be completed on time. We are expecting that it will start operation in early 2022. Around 20 to 22 per cent work has already been completed,” said Pune Airport Director Ajay Kumar.

The size of the existing terminal building is 22,300 sq m. The new terminal building will be built on 40,000 sq m area towards the eastern side of the existing building. After that, the total size of the airport will be 64,300 sq m. The estimated cost of the new terminal building is Rs 400 crore. The work is expected to get over by 2021.

It will enable the airport to handle passenger traffic of 20 million per year.

“The new terminal building is managed by the AAI. After the construction is completed, it will compete with other airports. The building will have better space for fliers and better amenities,” said Kumar.

As per the design, there will be two runways, more apron area, a parking bay for aeroplanes, automatic gate for entry inside the security hold area and more restaurants and food outlets.
