2 Warkari killed, 17 injured as JCB vehicle hit Dindi in Dive ghat

"A total of 19 devotees were brought to the hospital, of which two were dead.  Three persons have sustained critical injuries like rib fracture and leg fracture. They will need surgeries and further treatment.  The others have sustained minor injuries," said Dr HK Sale from the hospital.

PUNE: In a tragic incident, two devotees (Warkari) were killed while 15 others sustained injuries after a JCB vehicle rammed into a group (Dindi) in Diveghat on Tuesday morning.

The incident took place around 9.30 am when the Sant Namdev Maharaj Palkhi was on the way  to Alandi from Pandharpur. The devotees alleged that even after demanding police protection for the pilgrimage, the protection was not provided.

The deceased persons have been identified as Sopan Maharaj Namdas (35), who was the 17th descendant of Namdev Maharaj, and  Atul Alashi (24).

According to police, there were about 150 devotees who were part of the Kartiki Wari (pilgrimage) to Alandi. As the Palkhi was passing through turn near Wadki village, a JCB vehicle hit the devotees after the driver lost control over the vehicle due to break fail. 

The injured persons were rushed to Noble Hospital in Hadapsar.
