18 students and 3 teachers hurt in highway accident

PUNE: In a collision between a State Transport bus and a stationary trolley, 18 students and 3 teachers were injured near Talegaon Dabhade on Wednesday. 

Police officials said that the students, aged 14-15 years, of BJ Khatal School were returning from a picnic in Konkan and heading to their homes in Sangamner when the accident occurred.

A trolley carrying sugarcane broke down on the Mumbai-Pune Highway near Talegaon Dabhade and the bus driver could not judge the stationary trolley and rammed into it.

Of the 45 occupants, 22 were injured in the accident. The impact caused the trolley to roll over, spilling the sugarcane on the highway, resulting in traffic snarls. 

Officials of Talegaon Dabhade police station rushed to the spot to rescue the students and clear the traffic. 

The officials said that the lane towards Pune was impacted and hence Pune-bound traffic was diverted on the Mumbai lane. The bus driver was also injured and all were rushed to a private hospital in Somatane.

Police Inspector Amarnath Waghmode said a case will be lodged against the trolley driver who is yet to be traced. The police have identified the bus driver as Naeem Shaikh (35) and teachers as Chandsaheb Atar (55), Sakharam Bhalerao (52) and Haribhau Barde (59). Police officials have informed that Shaikh has received 22 stitches. The Talegaon Dabhade police are investigating the case.
