16 flights affected after Sukhoi 30MKI tyre bursts

Pune:  An Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter jet Su-30MKI suffered a tyre burst on the runway at Pune Airport and remained stranded there for more than an hour, disrupting air traffic and causing inconvenience to passengers. The incident took place at around 11.15 am on Monday.

According to Airport Director Ajay Kumar, it took an hour to clear the runway and the flight operations resumed two hours later. In a press release, he said, “Total 16 flights were affected due to runway closure from 11.20 am to 1.30 pm on Monday. Six departures were delayed on the ground at Pune. Three aircraft were diverted, one to Hyderabad and two to Mumbai. Another two aircraft arrived late. Total five arrivals were delayed and subsequent flights i.e. five departing flights were delayed. There is no cancellation. Inconvenience caused is regretted.”

IndiGo Airlines issued an advisory on Twitter asking passengers to check the flight status before leaving for the airport. Passengers used social media to get updates. A flier Anagha Lazarus asked the airline on Twitter, “The flight from Nagpur to Pune is delayed yet again, same thing happened when I was travelling from Pune to Nagpur on 10th March. This is absurd! No value for the customer’s time, and the amount of inconvenience caused.”

IndiGo replied, “Hi Anagha, so sorry to know that you have been facing delays consistently. Your flight is delayed due to temporary runway closure at Pune airport. Appreciate your understanding of the same.”

AirAsia India spokesperson said, “I5-1426 BLR-PNQ Standard Time of Departure (STD) is 1305 but the Actual Time of Departure was 13:48 with a delay of 43 minutes. Boarding was complete as per STD however ATC at BLR and PNQ held the departure due to non-availability of PNQ runway. I5-1426 PNQ-JAI Standard Time of Departure is 1455, but the Actual Time of Departure was 1556 with a delay of 61 minutes. Both delays were due to non-availability of Pune runway. We expect consequential delays on further routings JAI-PNQ-BLR I5-1427.”
