1,059 students graduate from CoEP

PUNE: As many as 1,059 students of College of Engineering (CoEP) Pune, have been awarded their degree certificates at the 13th graduation ceremony of the autonomous college held at the main auditorium on Tuesday.

This was also the first year of the first batch of students who passed out with honours and minor courses. A total of 11 students of 2019 BTech batch were awarded the gold medals.

Vice-Chancellor of Savitribai Phule Pune University, Nitin Karmalkar, was the chief guest in presence of the Chairman of Board of Governors (BoG) of the college Vijay Bhatkar, CoEP Director BB Ahuja, Deputy Director MS Sutaone, Controller of Examination SG Sonar and deans and heads of departments.

Bhatkar in his address to students stated that it is important for everyone to remain abreast with the emerging technologies which will cause profound changes in our lives in the time to come.

Speaking on the similar lines, Karmalkar in his address to the new graduates too insisted upon the need to get well-versed with the technology which has been overtaking humans.

“We are in a technology-driven generation now. With new technologies like artificial intelligence which are growing rapidly not only in the field of engineering but also in the field of medical, social sciences etc. will soon be an integral part of our lives,” he added.

Citing the example of the Chandrayaan-2 project, which was launched on July 22, the VC said that the project is built on new and latest technologies. “For a country like India, Chandrayaan-2 is one of the biggest attempts and achievements in the history of science and technology,” Karmalkar said.

“The arts and commerce background graduates shouldn’t feel that they don’t need the knowledge of technology as technology is present in our day to day activity,” he added.

He further said, “Our students of technical education can contribute to developing or supporting the development of these technologies.”

Karmalkar also said that by 2020, India will be one of the countries with a large population of youths. Therefore, he suggested that higher educational institutes should leverage this resource productively. The director had presented the annual report which showcased some of the major highlights of CoEP for academic year 2018-19 during the event.

CHAOTIC START OF THE CONVOCATION
The ceremony started on a chaotic note as many parents were irked due to a technical goof-up during the convocation. Parents said that the students were informed a day before the event that parents can accompany them. Many parents came from Kolhapur, Palghar, Nagpur, Navi Mumbai, Mumbai and far away places to accompany their children at the event.

However, when they reached the venue, they learned that the auditorium had a seating capacity of 700-800 seats. Hence, an audio-visual arrangement was made at the seminar hall for the parents.

Nevertheless, because of technical glitches, parents had missed the first few minutes of the graduation ceremony. A few parents said that the college had streamed the ceremony live on YouTube. If the college was to stream it online, then parents shouldn’t have been called to the college”, they complained.
