‘Tier-II and tier-III cities are driving the demand for security products’

There has been a massive rise in demand for surveillance products and solutions in last few years. What is the scenario concerning growth of this sector in India?
- We had experienced a good growth phase in the previous financial year. The current state of the physical security market in India is very conducive for growth and expansion. Apart from the eight metro cities, India’s vast network of Tier-II and Tier-III cities are developing at a rapid pace, which is also driving the demand of these products. The three-pronged strategy of Smart City Mission, Digital India and Make in India by the government has created a positive impact on the sector.

How are surveillance products and solutions adapting to the latest technology to improve surveillance capabilities?
- Certainly, surveillance products and solutions have been successful in catching up with the technology drive. We now have Hikvision AI enabled DeepinView; IP Camera Series with face recognition capabilities. The cameras adopt advanced deep learning algorithm to realise instant face detection, capture and comparison to accomplish face recognition and related alarm triggering. Hikvision’s Face Library can generate blacklists and whitelists to trigger alarms and automate entry and exit authorisations in a range of applications.

Hikvision embeds its algorithms within the cameras and recorders which eliminates the need for computer servers. This means less delay in transmission and decreasing the burden on back-end devices. Similarly, we have provision of encrypting surveillance data which is also connected with cloud platforms.

How have the surveillance cameras developed to deal with conditions like climate conditions, light availability and such factors ?
- With latest technology, such challenges are resolved. Now, cameras can see in zero light condition as well and can withstand any weather conditions. Hikvision, the world’s leading supplier of innovative video surveillance products and solutions, has created the next level of night surveillance with the latest upgrade of its DarkFighter technology - the DarkFighterX series. The technology can provide colourful, sharp images right down to the lowest light levels - in fact to 0.001 lux. Hikvision thermal cameras are helpful in low light scenarios to detect and deter the intruders at the perimeter of border areas, industrial plants or critical infrastructure buildings. Cameras now have long detection range up to 1 km. From sea side to deserted area, a city’s borders are often vulnerable to criminal activities. Hikvision’s thermal camera and Laser PT positioner can detect faraway intrusion for carrying out proactive operations.

Pune city has about 1,400 surveillance cameras for population of above 50 lakh. So what is the ideal density of cameras for surveillance in a city?
- There is no fixed formula for ideal density of CCTV cameras, it depends on the critical surveillance requirements of the civic and police administration of the city. It depends on what kind of project end-user want to execute, like general surveillance, ITMS (Intelligent Traffic Management System) or FRS (Face Recognition System) or combination of all these features. The camera density depends on the area, critical infrastructure and installations and priority areas for VIP movement. Similarly, for better operations, we can opt for a distributed architecture of multiple command and control centres across the city instead of centralised command and control centres which will depend on our need.

How is the absorption of products across domains and what are the expansion plans in India?
- The government and public sector undertakings form the largest and most promising vertical solution market in India. It is followed by oil and gas in the second position. The banking and retail verticals are in the third position in terms of sourcing security systems and solutions as end-users. It is followed by real estate, education, pharma, healthcare and other verticals. The latest AI enabled solution for retail sector has created lot of buzz with its People Counting, Heat Mapping and Que Detection applications. We have made a substantial investment in government’s ambitious ‘Make in India’ programme. Hikvision has also set up a world-class manufacturing plant near Mumbai to cater to India and overseas market. Our current capacity is five lakh cameras and one lakh beacon devices.
