Pune: The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) is all set to launch its ladies special ‘Tejaswini’ on Women’s Day with 30 new ‘midi’ buses. These buses are equipped with advanced technology including CCTV cameras.
According to a PMPML official, “The bus will have 32 seats and the seat behind the driver will have seat belts. There is a CCTV camera installed on both front and rear doors. The dustbin is placed at the rear door. There is digital information board which helps ladies to know about the next stop. All information about the bus station, status of the bus will be automatically informed to the control room by the Intelligent Transportation Management System (ITMS), which has been installed in all buses.”
Nayana Gunde, Chairperson and Managing Director of PMPML, said, “We are all set to start the ladies special bus on the occasion of International Women’s Day on March 8. The bus will have a lady conductor. The number of women employed in Pune is huge. Many women have to go to work far away from home. Therefore, it is necessary to provide special buses and other facilities to them.”
In the 2016-17 budget, the State government allocated Rs 50 crore to provide financial assistance to intra-city transport bodies in five cities viz Pune, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan-Dombivli and Nagpur.
Of this allocation, PMPML received Rs 10 crore and finalised a ‘request for proposal’ (RFP) specifying the attributes of the midi-buses that were to be procured. Despite floating the tender twice, the PMPML was not able to find a manufacturer that would provide the buses with specified attributes.
