‘Support must to prevent suicides’

‘Support must to prevent suicides’

PUNE:  Every member of the family and friends should help fight challenges of mental health, said doctors from the city while speaking on mental health issues on the occasion of World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10.

As per the World Health Organization (WHO), suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15 to 29-year-olds. Also, one person commits suicide every 40 seconds.

‘Working Together to Prevent Suicide’ is the theme of the 2019 World Suicide Prevention Day. The theme was chosen internationally as it highlights the most essential ingredient for effective global suicide prevention - ‘Collaboration’.

Rujuta Mahajan, a city-based psychologist said, “Between the age of 15 to 29 years, people go through a lot of change. They need more emotional and mental support from family and friends.”

“The theme for this year’s suicide prevention day stands apt. With changes around, anyone can need mental support and sometimes help from a trained clinician and taking help is important,” said Mahajan.

Head of Department of Psychiatry at Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial (YCM) Hospital Dr Manjeet Santre said that family can understand if there are any behavioural changes in a person.

“Family can further analyse how serious these changes are and whether the individual needs help.

Everyone should keep an eye on people around them. Also, with fast changing technology around us, the symptoms are changing. Hence, every observation is important,” said Dr Santre while speaking to Sakal Times.

Suicidal behaviour has a large number of complex underlying causes, including poverty, unemployment, loss of loved ones, arguments, breakdown in relationships and legal or work-related problems.

A family history of suicide, alcohol and drug abuse, childhood abuse, social isolation and some mental disorders including depression and schizophrenia also play a central role in a large number of suicides. Physical illness and disabling pain can also increase suicide risks.

Dr Santre further added that protective factors can be beneficial in the prevention of suicide. “These include high self-esteem and social connectedness especially with family and friends, having social support, being in a stable relationship and religious or spiritual commitment,” said Dr Santre.

The most common methods used for suicidal attempts are pesticides, firearms and medication, such as painkillers, which can be toxic when consumed in excessive amounts.
