‘State should announce stand on NPR’

PUNE: The Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra should bring out a notification announcing that it will not co-operate in the process of preparation of National Population Register (NPR) which is scheduled to commence in the country from April 1, said social activist and psephologist Yogendra Yadav on Monday.

He was speaking during an interaction with media on Monday at SM Joshi Foundation in Pune.

Yadav, who also visited anti-CAA protests in the city at Kondhwa on Monday, said, “Although some ministers in the State government have publicly announced that they will not let NPR and NRC happen in the State, why no official statement in this regard has been issued by the government so far? Therefore, there has been confusion about the Maharashtra government’s stance on these key issues,” he said.

Pointing to a statement made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah that he was ready to talk with those protesting against CAA, NRC and NPR, Yadav said that he accepts the invitation for a discussion with Shah and that the banner Hum Bharat Ke Log has also dispatched a letter to the Home Ministry conveying the willingness for talks with the home minister.

Yadav said that the banner, Hum Bharat Ke Log, under which several anti-CAA-NRC protests have been held in various cities and towns, was a movement to integrate India and not only limited to opposition to CAA and NRC.

“NPR is scheduled to commence from April 1. Before the deadline, we will spread awareness among common people about CAA, NRC and NPR,” Yadav said adding that the campaign will aim at uniting communities.

He also said, “Only two days ago, PM Modi said that there will be no going back on CAA. This statement came only a day after Home Minister Shah said that he was ready for talks. This shows that the government has already decided on the conclusions of not having any potential discussion.”

CAMPAIGN TO UNITE INDIA
The outfit, Hum Bharat Ke Log, will launch a month-long Bharat Jodo Abhiyan (Unite India Campaign) from February 22, the death anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad till March 23, the martyrdom day of Bhagat Singh, to spread awareness about the ill-effects of CAA, NRC and NPR for India.
