‘Poor HSC results due to Board’s sloppiness’

PUNE: With the chaos in the results of the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination and the parents crying foul as far as paper checking is concerned, the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Examination (MSBSHSE) has decided to fast-track the process of revaluation of marks. However, while some of the activists feel that the paper checking process may have some issues, the principals and others have asserted otherwise.

“The State Board has been conducting HSC examinations for several years now. Just because the scores have come out lower one year, it would not be right to generalise and say that the paper checking by the board was faulty,” said Laxmanrao Apte Prashala and Junior College Principal Teresa David.

She also added that while the picture will be clearer once the students get the photocopies of their answer sheets, as to why the scores are low, there is no evidence to blame the board right now.

Sir Parshurambhau (SP) College Principal Dilip Sheth said, “While we have not received any complaints as such from our HSC students, I have heard of the issue. The students will be getting their final mark sheets on Tuesday (June 11). May be, we will see if there is indeed any problem with the internal marks of our students like some of the complainants have been claiming.”

However, the parents continue to state that the board is hiding something.

“How is it possible that all bright students, who have always scored good marks and have also cleared tougher entrance examinations with good scores, have fared so low in the board examination? That too in such large numbers across the State. So many parents and students would not raise their voices without any reason, right? We believe in our children and we are very sure that the picture is going to change post-revaluation,” one of the Pune-based parents Ajit Singh said.

On the other hand, education expert AL Deshmukh has also suspected that the confusion might be a product of the board’s sloppy work.

“We have seen in the past, that there is a possibility that the problem might actually be in the board’s evaluation. While we cannot say anything for sure right now, I think we cannot completely deny the claims of the parents too,” he added.

While the HSC students’ parents have been anticipating filing a written petition in the court to hold off admissions at the professional colleges until the confusion is sorted, the students wait in anticipation as the competition for marks and admissions begins in the State.
