‘Kalagram’ will be set up under ‘Smart City’

Pune: A cultural hub, ‘Kalagram’, has been planned under ‘Smart City’ near PL Deshpande Garden, off Sinhagad Road, announced MLA Madhuri Misal here on Sunday.

The cultural hub will provide a platform for artists from Pune and other places to present their art.

“The tendering process for this project has started and the estimated cost is Rs 10.5 to 11 crore. Out of this, Misal’s special MLA fund will contribute Rs 2 crore, while Rs 75 lakh is being given by MP Anil Shirole through his MP Fund and Rs 1 crore has been marked through the fund of Navinyapurna Yojana. This initial amount of around Rs 3.75 to 4 crore will facilitate the speedy start of the project,” Misal informed.

The design of Kalagram will resemble the farmer’s weekly market, constituting shops set up by different artisans. In this one-of-its-kind market, citizens will be able to watch the artisans working on their craft and also get an opportunity to shop.

“Here, the artists will also get an opportunity to market their unique handmade articles. I was making efforts to make this project happen from the last six to seven years. Now, it will be completed under Smart City project,” the MLA added.

The project is designed by well-known landscape designer Shobha Bhopatkar. Delhi’s famous tourist attractions ‘Delhi Haat’ of Pritampur and Janakpuri were studied for designing Pune’s ‘Kalagram’ project.

‘Kalagram’ will have an open theatre for the performing arts. It will also have a food court presenting cuisines from different states and a vast area for sitting, chatting and walking.
