‘Fake I-T calculator trojan on prowl’

PUNE: The Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) has issued a warning about the spread of a Remote Access Trojan (RAT), spreading via crafted Microsoft Office Spreadsheet file which lures the victim as a fake Income Tax Calculator.

The warning stated that once the user opens the document, it contains malicious macro embedded in it which immediately starts executing on the host system.

Cyber experts said that such trojans can act as phishing links which can lure users to share their details.

CERT has advised users not to open documents from untrusted sources. CERT has also asked all to enforce whitelisting of applications at workstations to prevent unauthorised software from gaining access.

Similarly, users should not open attachments in unsolicited e-mails, even if they come from people in your contact list and never click on a URL contained in an unsolicited e-mail, even if the link seems benign. In cases of accessing genuine URLs, close out the e-mail and go to the website through the browser.
