‘Budget may not have anything new for Pune’

PUNE: Legislators from the city have no big expectations from the Union government in the interim budget. While the opposition leaders said they didn’t expect anything new from this budget, the ruling party MP said the government has already done a lot for Pune.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MP from the city Vandana Chavan said, “There are three major development works going on in Pune: Metro railway, Smart City projects and Japanese government-funded Mula-Mutha river development. The Union government has disbursed funds for these three projects.  The Metro railway work is being done as per the schedule. However, nothing substantial has been done in other two projects till date.”

She said, “The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government will present its last budget for this tenure. Therefore, they don’t have any scope to do anything new for Pune. However, they may announce populist measures.”

“I don’t have any expectation from the BJP government. The Union government cannot take any policy decision in this budget,” Chavan said.

Senior Congress leader Mohan Joshi said, “I don’t expect anything from the BJP government. The Union government doesn’t have the right to present a full budget. They have to present an interim budget. They cannot take any decision. We will put forth our demands for Pune before the new government.”

City BJP MP Anil Shirole said, “It is an interim budget. So, the government cannot take any policy decision. However, the Union government has given a lot to Pune. It has disbursed huge funds for the Metro railway, smart city projects, Chandni Chowk flyover, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMYA). All promised development works have started in the city.”
