‘BJP should contest for Maval Lok Sabha seat’

Pimpri: Pimpri-Chinchwad Mayor Rahul Jadhav and office-bearers of the ruling party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the municipal corporation have demanded that the party should contest Maval Lok Sabha seat.

The seat is currently represented by Shrirang Barne of the Shiv Sena.

Mayor Jadhav, accompanied by Leader of the House in the municipal corporation Eknath Pawar and BJP corporators, met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in this connection in Pune on Monday. Deputy Mayor Sachin Chinchwade and Standing Committee Chairperson Mamata Gaikwad were also present.

The local BJP leaders told the chief minister that the party candidate in Maval constituency will be easily elected and therefore the party should seek the seat from the Shiv Sena.

Pawar said the chief minister heard the views of the delegation and promised to look into the issue.

He said the BJP was strong in Pimpri, Chinchwad and Maval assembly constituencies and it also had supporters in three assembly segments from the Raigad districts.

In the 2014 election, Laxman Jagtap who had contested as a Peasants and Workers Party (PWP) candidate had posed a serious challenge to Shiv Sena’s Barne. Rahul Narvekar of the NCP had to contend with the third position.

Later, Jagtap was elected as a BJP candidate to the State Assembly from Chinchwad constituency.

Barne and Jagtap are local political rivals and it is feared that their supporters will not work wholeheartedly for the success of the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance.
