‘BJP needed to learn a lesson’

PUNE: While the BJP certainly won fewer seats than expected in the State Assembly polls this time, the citizens in Pune said that this was a lesson they needed to learn. Overall, even though the victory was not as large as the BJP-Shiv Sena had predicted, Puneites feel that the number of seats won was not that bad.
NACHIKET SAHASRABUDDHE, LAWYER
“The result this time shows that democracy still rules in our country. People showed BJP that they were unhappy with the party and the leaders. I am pro-BJP, but still, use of the issue of Article 370 in the election campaigns instead of the actual issues that have affected the lives of people in the state has affected the outcome.”
GEETIKA AWASTHI, TEACHER
“I think the election result for BJP was quite okay this time, since the party fought on a lesser number of seats than last time. The seat share for Shiv Sena too was more this time. So overall, the performance was not that bad.”
TEJAS JADHAV, STUDENT
“In several constituencies in Pune district, BJP suffered because of the rebels in the party who took away a substantial share of their votes. This benefitted NCP candidates the most. I believe that this should have taught a good lesson to the BJP-Shiv Sena leaders and the Chief Minister too. So let’s hope that at least in this term, they work better than the last time, and resolve the issues that have hampered them.”
ADV MANMOHAN AMBEKAR
“BJP has not won with a clean sweep, but that’s alright. BJP never had the support of the people of Maharashtra like they have it for last five years now. Shiv Sena had always been on the forefront. So this was nonetheless an achievement. I think NCP too has pulled off an exemplary achievement this time, as despite losing their big leaders to BJP, they still managed to win so many seats. As far as the performance of Congress was concerned, I think that it’s their loyal voter base that has helped them, as we did not see the party take any special efforts for campaigning in the state.”
MRINALINI ANAND, HOUSEWIFE
“The result was very much expected. The NDA government has not worked for any social segment, especially the women and youth. There were no jobs in the market. This was a lesson for all the political parties.”
