‘111 vacant teaching posts in SPPU to be filled soon’

PUNE: On his first visit to the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) after swearing in as the State Minister of Higher and Technical Education, Uday Samant on Saturday announced a few quick decisions related to the university and higher education.

Regarding the long-pending recruitment of 111 vacant teaching posts in SPPU, Samant assured these posts would soon be filled as there is a shortage of teaching staff. “SPPU has been expanding slowly, enrolment of students has also increased, and several professors have retired over these years. Hence, the university has outsourced professors to run the varsity smoothly. But this cannot be a long-term solution,” Samant  said.

“Taking this into consideration, an advertisement will be released directing the recruitment of 111 teaching staff in university within a month. Later, the recruitment process will be completed,” said Samant at a media interaction held in SPPU.

Besides, the minister said, “There are several vacant posts of teaching staff in other non-agriculture universities in the State as well, which too will be filled soon. I will soon meet district Guardian Minister and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar who also holds the Ministry of Finance portfolio, will look into resolving the issue of filling these vacancies at the earliest.”

“I assure that a positive decision will be taken in this regard,” he added.

This decision will positively reflect on other state universities as well, stated the minister.

Establishment of Nashik and Ahmednagar sub-centres have also been in the pipeline for the past few years. Samant said a full-fledged university will function at these sub-centres within three months.

“We have decided that even though a highway is cutting through the Nashik centre -- dividing it into two sides -- we will set up a sub-centre, where officials work will be undertaken. On another side, a residential facility will be developed. In 15 days, a government resolution will be published and sent to the university,” he said.

“Out of 7 lakh students of SPPU, two lakh are studying at these centres. Therefore, as these students had expected and as per their demands and requirement, the prolonged project will be fast-tracked. The laying of the foundation stone will be done in two months,” assured Samant.
