Coronavirus Pune: Congress demands details of migrant workers from district administration

Pune: Congress’ city unit is willing to pay for migrant workers' rail travel after Congress President Sonia Gandhi has announced the same. In this regard, the city unit of the party sought details of the migrant workers from the district administration and the rail department.

Maharashtra Pradesh Congress party secretary and former MLA Mohan Joshi said, "The Congress has applied to the Pune district collector and Pune railway divisional office to provide information on migrant workers from outside Maharashtra, who want to travel to their states by railway. Once we have these details, we will pay railway ticket fares to the railway administration."

He said, "Our party has also suggested to the district administration to conduct health check-ups of the migrant workers at the BJ Medical ground or any other ground before sending them back."

"The party will also help the administration during the check-ups of the migrant workers," he added.

He criticized the central government, which had provided free air facilities to bring back Indian citizens staying abroad. However, these migrant workers don't have money and the government is taking railway fare from them to go to their respective States.

According to PMC statistics, they are providing food and shelter to around 2,000 labourers so far. However, there are around one lakh labourers in different relief camps of the district administration across the Pune district. Most of them are from Bihar, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Jharkhand.
