Underprivileged sections unaware of Constitution

PUNE: The majority of commercial sex workers (CSWs) are unaware of their constitutional rights, revealed a survey on constitutional literacy of CSWs of Budhwar Peth by students of ILS Law College.

The students of fourth year BA, LLB  Bodhi Ramteke, Shubham Gurav and Pranav Mane and third year Sanjot Shirsath conducted the survey under the guidance of Advocate Asim Sarode.

As per the survey, 91.5 per cent of women out of 50 CSWs have stated ‘no’ to awareness about rights granted by the Constitution.

Although these women are unaware of their rights granted as per the Constitution of India, they replied in positive to a question asked about the injustice meted out to them.

As many as 93.1 per cent of them said ‘yes’ when asked whether they know what injustice means.

“The Indian Constitution has completed 70 years. Yet the underprivileged section of the society is unaware of it. This is a collective failure of the society and the government of our country,” the students said in the report.

“This survey can be considered a sample or representative of CSWs across the country, as their suffering and discrimination remain the same. The survey consists of information about issues of CSWs including their children’s lives, physical abuse, financial stress and challenges they face with the police,” said Ramteke.

“Regardless of so many issues that they face, these women are unaware of the constitutional rights,” he added. “Every person should be aware about the constitutional rights, especially those who are in need. Unfortunately, it has not reached the underprivileged class of the society or can say consciously kept out of it,” said Ramteke.

“The government departments of Social Welfare, Social Justice, Women and Child Development, Law and Judiciary have been expected to raise awareness about the constitutional rights of these women. They also receive funds to conduct such events. But unfortunately, the survey reflects that all of these government bodies have failed to reach the women,” said Sarode.
