Swiggy starts home delivery of alcohol in West Bengal

Following Jharkhand and Odisha, Swiggy started home delivery of alcohol in Kolkata and Siliguri on Thursday, and is now preparing to expand to 24 cities in West Bengal. Swiggy is using its existing logistics and technology infrastructure to ensure that all guidelines, including social distance, are maintained during the delivery, a corporate statement said.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, food delivery apps have started delivering alcohol at door steps to avoid overcrowding of people outside wine shops.

A company spokesperson said, "Building on our successful launches in Jharkhand and Odisha we will now be enabling safe home delivery of alcohol in West Bengal. Starting with Kolkata and Siliguri, we will expand our services to 24 other cities across the state."

After validating the license and other relevant documentation, as outlined by the State government, the company partners with approved retailers in major cities.

The statement says that retail partners are fitted with a dedicated partner app that allows all aspects of online orders.

The spokesman added that since the beginning of the shutdown, the company is working closely with West Bengal government to help in many fronts like supply of food and necessities, seafood and school books and the distribution of almost 1 lakh meals to the poor in Kolkata.

Both supplier and retailers are virtually trained in their respective applications for smooth processing and order fulfillment.

In order to ensure safe home delivery of alcohol orders, Swiggy has introduced many security measures.

Customers must carry out an immediate age verification by uploading a picture of their government ID, followed by a selfie.

There are restrictions put on the quantity of the order in compliance with state’s excise law. Anybody in West Bengal can have access to the ‘Wine Shop’ category just by updating their apps.
