India crosses 1 lakh coronavirus cases: A timeline 

India reported close to 5,000 new cases of the novel coronavirus in the last 24 hours, taking the nationwide total past one lakh with 3,165 deaths reported. This development came on Monday when India entered its fourth phase of lockdown.

Originating in the city of Wuhan in China, the COVID-19 pandemic has created havoc with the whole world on its knees. India is one of the worst-hit countries which has been affected. Though the Centre has eased some relaxations on the lockdown, the cases have doubled in 12 days.

Check out the following timeline of the 2020 COVID-19 outbreak in the country:

January 30: The first coronavirus case was confirmed in Kerala after a student returned home for a vacation from Wuhan in China.

February 4: Kerala declared the infection a State calamity.

March 2: Two more cases, a 24-year-old engineer in Hyderabad and a 45-year-old man in Delhi were detected positive. Both had a travel history.

March 4: India started observing a sudden rise in the spread of coronavirus. 14 Italian tourists and one India, all from the same group test positive. 

March 11: WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the health organisation is deeply worried by the upsetting levels of spread and declared coronavirus a pandemic.

March 12: After Kerala, another South-Indian state witnessed coronavirus patients. Chief Minister of Karnataka BS Yediyurappa declared all schools, colleges, theatres and restaurants to be shut for a week across the State.

March 13: After Kerala and Karnataka, Punjab and Chhattisgarh also announced to shut down all schools and colleges. Even Manipur government schools to remain close.

March 14: Immediately, Maharashtra too shut down its shopping malls, gyms, theatres, swimming pools, educational institute. Rajasthan followed the same.

March 17: India reported 137 cases.

March 20: Meanwhile, Bollywood singer Kanika Kapoor who returned from the UK tests positive in Uttar Pradesh.

March 22: India observed ‘Janta Curfew’ following to PM Narendra Modi’s advice. India had 324 cases.

March 24: PM Modi declared a 21-day lockdown in the nation in a bid to curtails the spread of the COVID-19.

March 26: An Indian preacher who was part of a Tablighi Jamaat function at Nizamuddin Markaz in Delhi found positive.

April 5: To mark the nation’s battle against the virus, the entire country switched off their lights and lighted diyas and candles in their balconies.

April 7: India crossed death tally of 100.

April 14: PM Narendra Modi extended countrywide lockdown till May 3.

April 16: India registered 12,759 confirmed coronavirus cases.

April 18: WHO and Global Citizen jointly hosted a global on-air special to respect and support frontline healthcare workers.

May 2: India extended lockdown till May 17

May 4: The Government of India began an evacuation of stranded Indian citizens from across the world called ‘Vande Bharat Mission’.

May 10: Indian Navy in its operation ‘Samudra Setu’ rescued 700 stranded Indians from Maldives.

May 12: The Prime Minister in an address to the nation declared economic package of Rs 20 lakh crore.

May 18: India entered the fourth phase of lockdown with some relaxations in some parts of the country. Also, India crossed the mark of 1 lakh coronavirus cases.
