Cyclone Amphan: Woman delivers baby inside fire  truck

Super cyclone Amphan will hit the West Bengal and Odisha today with gusty winds and heavy rains. In the coastal state of Odisha over 1,704 shelter camps have been set up in whereas teams of NDRF are also ready to battle the cyclone.

Amid stormy winds and extreme rainfall during Amphan, a pregnant woman delivered a baby in the fire truck with the help of fire officers who rescued them on Wednesday.

The incident was reported from Mahakalapada in Kendrapara district where the heavy rains and strong winds have already created a destruction.

According to reports, a pregnant woman Janaki Sethi, wife of Hatim Sethi of Mahakalapada police limits was undergoing labour pain on Wednesday morning. In this situation, her family tried calling an ambulance but due to extreme weather conditions and road blockade, the ambulance was not available.

Amid the winds, many trees were uprooted as a result, fire team along with the tree cutter rushed the spot after receiving the information. Two fire services teams armed with machinery rushed to the spot. The officers clean the road by cutting fallen trees.

After witnessing the woman in pain, the fire officers in no time carried the pregnant woman in their vehicle to reach the hospital for immediate treatment. However, the woman delivered a baby girl halfway in the vehicle while being taken to the Mahakalapada Community Health Centre (CHC).

The fire brigade team also helped to deliver primary healthcare services to both mother and newborn and helped them reach the hospital for further treatment. The timely treatment and devoted efforts of the fire services personnel saved two lives.

Meanwhile, the IMD has already stated “Amphan is likely to maintain the intensity of cyclonic storm till the morning of May 21,” the weather department said in its bulletin. Thereafter, Amphan will weaken into a Deep Depression over Bangladesh.”
